Chapter 3 page 35

Morio offers Ann an ear, listening to her worries and sorrows. He squeezes her shoulder in quiet support. Realizing that her time with Morio is up and that he still has other people to see in his work, she encourages him to go and gives him a brave, if tired, smile.
Ann: I don’t know if I’m relieved or not.
That she seems so clear-minded, and I’m… I’m just a mess inside.
We’ve been lucky in so many ways. We’ve had time together. But it’s so unfair… Why? Why does it have to be this way? I accept it, but I—I don’t.
I don’t want her to die.
*gentle squeeze*
Ann:  You’re over time.
Morio: That is all right.
Ann: No, you should go. There are other people who need to see you. We’ll be fine. I’ll be fine.
