Chapter 2 page 40

The old man, Alf, relates his dilemma. He’s clearly comfortable talking to Morio and ordering him around. He then asks Morio for the robot’s opinion on the matter.
Alf: When people weren’t saying anything, staying away like it was catching, I thought, “Too bad, buddy. You already got it. It’s called life. You wanna talk about it?” 
But it sounds like it needs a bloody footnote and fine print to go with it. 
Morio: What are you thinking now?
Alf: Something along the lines of “life’s a joke”, but not so bitter. And a punchline. I’m still working on it. Oh, that’s a good one. “Still working on the punchline.” Remember that one for me.
